Okay, so on an author’s blog it might seem a little odd to have two posts in a row that are about his budding drawing ability rather than his books. But, this one deals with books, for sure!
Friend and fellow fantasy author Lindsay Schopfer is currently hosting a fan art contest, with real prizes in the form of Amazon gift cards and signed books. Being a fan, and having just wrapped up an amazing online drawing class, I decided to give it a go, and the above image is the result of my labors.
What do you think? Pretty cool, eh?
The creature in question is known as a Stilt Leg Beast and appears in the opening sequence of the second Keltin Moore novel, “Into the North”. I’ve always thought that creature, with its strange gait and second brain hidden deep in the body, was creepy and cool.
I did take a few creative liberties with the depiction, though. In the novel the monster is described as being black with white mottled skin. However, I chose to go with the more colorful depiction you see here because I knew I’d be drawing the picture set at night and lit by moonlight, and I wanted the beast to stand out.
One thing’s for sure, Lindsay’s awesome books provide artists with some excellent fodder, particularly if you like drawing cool and bizarre creatures! If you’re interested, you should definitely consider putting a piece into the contest yourself!
